Guided Fly Fishing in Yellowstone National Park

America's First National Park

Yellowstone isn't just a destination. It's a landmark. The world's first national park holds more geothermal features than anywhere else on earth, more wildlife than most people will ever see, and some of the most storied trout water in the American West. Geysers erupting on schedule. Bison roaming open valleys. Thermal springs shimmering in colors that don't look real.

And running right through all of it are the rivers where we fish.

With Jackson sitting about an hour from the South Entrance, we focus on the southern reaches of the park, where we have access to water that consistently produces. The fisheries here are as varied as the landscape: thermal rivers with otherworldly hatches (including the famous Firehole, winding past geysers and hot springs unlike anything else on earth), deep cold lakes with trophy cutthroat, and backcountry stretches that most visitors never reach. Wherever your guide puts you, the setting alone makes it unforgettable. A day here tends to be adventurous, beautiful, and creates memories to last a lifetime.

Yellowstone Lake

Yellowstone Lake is a world-class fishery holding trophy-sized Cutthroat Trout that most anglers never get the chance to target. It's a large lake best fished by motorboat, and throughout the summer you can expect fish in the 19 to 27 inch range on dries, nymphs, and streamers. Attractions include the West Thumb Geyser Basin, where Fishing Cone rises directly out of the water at the lake's edge. Very few people ever reach this part of the park, and fishing it is one of the most remarkable ways to experience Yellowstone while catching fish worth traveling for.

Lewis Lake

Lewis Lake is an exceptional fishery about 1.5 hours north of Jackson, home to both Brown Trout and Lake Trout. Most fish run in the 16 to 22 inch range, with some pushing bigger. We fish from drift boats with small outboard motors, targeting flats and drop-offs with nymphs and streamers, and dries during the Brown Drake hatch. It's a quieter, less-traveled corner of the region and consistently produces.

Firehole River

There are few fishing experiences on the planet like the Firehole. Listed in "Ten Places to Fly-Fish Before You Die" and just about every serious fly fishing destination list, the river earns its reputation on its own terms. What makes it unlike anything else is the setting: you're casting to wild trout while Grand Prismatic, Fountain Flat, and Old Faithful steam in the background. The water itself is warmed by geothermal activity, which creates epic hatches and conditions you simply won't find on any other river in the world. It's one of those days where the fishing is great and somehow still isn't the most remarkable thing that happened.

What to Expect on Your Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide Trip

That river winding past the Grand Prismatic Spring? That's the Firehole — and that's where we fish. One of the most remarkable stretches of trout water on earth, right in the middle of the world's most iconic national park.
